The verdict

If you want Agricola's brain without the constant fear of starving your family, this is the warmer, more forgiving sibling, and a lot of people quietly think it's the better one.

Best for: Euro fans who want deep building puzzles without the punishment.

The full review

What it is

Caverna is Uwe Rosenberg handing you a dwarf family, a cave, and a forest, then stepping back. You place workers to dig out mines, clear land for fields and pastures, breed animals, mine rubies, and send dwarves on expeditions to grab loot. There are 48 building tiles to buy, each with its own little engine. People love how open it is. You decide whether you're a farmer, a miner, an animal baron, or a bit of everything.

The catch

Here's the honest part. It's heavy and it's slow to set up, with a small mountain of tokens to sort before and after. Downtime is the real complaint: at four players you'll wait, and Rosenberg himself suggests five or fewer for a first game. Seven is technically allowed and basically a full day. It's also less punishing than Agricola, which some players read as less tense. Fewer hard decisions, more comfy sandbox.

Who it's for

So who's this for? Euro players who want a big building puzzle without Agricola's food panic breathing down their neck. The lack of occupation and minor improvement cards means slightly less wild variety game to game, but the sheer number of winning routes keeps it fresh for a long time. If you have the table space and the patience for setup, it earns its spot. Stick to two to four players and you'll have a great time.
