The verdict

One of the cleanest auction games ever made, and after 25 years it still earns the "stone-cold classic" label. If you can stomach a little chaos and a theme that's basically wallpaper, it's a near-perfect hour.

Best for: Groups of 3-5 who like quick, tense bidding and tight decisions over heavy planning

What it is

Here's the pitch. You've got a handful of numbered sun disks, and that's your whole bidding war. Tiles get drawn from a bag one at a time, the loot pile in the middle grows, and at some point someone shouts "Ra" and an auction kicks off. You bid one sun, highest takes the lot, and the sun you win sits out until next round. Three rounds, called epochs, and you're done. That's it. Knizia built a tense little engine out of almost nothing.

The catch

Now the honest part. The theme is wallpaper. You're collecting pharaohs and Nile tiles and monuments, but you're really just doing math in a toga, and some folks bounce off that hard. The scoring rewards paying attention to what everyone else needs, which can feel arbitrary your first game or two. And luck bites. A cruel run of tile draws or a bad sun split early can leave you grinding, and players who want full control over the outcome get genuinely cranky here.

Who it's for

But that tension is the whole point, and it's why people keep this one on the shelf for decades. Every auction is a gut check: grab a mediocre lot now, or gamble the pile gets richer and pray nobody snipes it. It's quick, it's mean in a friendly way, and it scales well from 2 to 5, though most players say 3 and up is where it sings. If clean, nervy bidding sounds like your night, get it.
