One of the best heavy engine-builders ever made, as long as everyone at your table actually wants to think this hard. If they don't, it's a long quiet evening.
Best for: Veteran strategy players who love deterministic puzzles and zero luck.
What it is
Terra Mystica hands each player one of 14 fantasy factions, then sets you loose to terraform a seven-color map into terrain you can build on. You grow dwellings into trading houses into temples and strongholds, you cycle power tokens through a clever little bowl system, and you race up cult tracks for points. There's no dice and no cards. What you build is exactly what you get, and people love that honesty.
The catch
Here's the blunt part. With no luck, falling behind early just feels bad, because the only thing to blame is the move you made twenty minutes ago. Players also widely call it multiplayer solitaire, and that complaint gets loudest at two. Add the analysis paralysis (real, and worst at four or five) plus starting positions that aren't always fair, and you've got a game that punishes a quiet, mismatched table.
Who it's for
So who's this for? People who genuinely enjoy out-thinking a problem and don't need elbows or chaos to feel engaged. If your group savors a tight optimization puzzle, this is near the top of the heap and earns its #36 BGG rank. If anyone wants theme, banter, or a comeback mechanism, steer them elsewhere. Best at three or four. Bring snacks and patient friends.
