One of the best heavy civ games ever made, and it'll happily eat your whole evening. If your group commits to learning it, almost nothing else hits the same.

What it is

Through the Ages is Vlaada Chvatil's civilization game, and it does the thing those games promise but rarely deliver. You start in antiquity with a couple of huts and end up juggling science, food, culture, government, military, and a row of great leaders. Cards flow across a central track and you spend actions to grab them, build them, and stitch them into an engine. Watching that engine grow is the whole joy. It really does feel like running an empire across centuries.

The catch

Now the honest part. This is heavy, and people don't exaggerate that. Expect two to four hours and a first game that feels like reading a tax form in a language you half know. The fiddliness is real too, with constant tracking of tokens and rows. The bigger issue is the gap between players. There's no handicap, so a veteran will quietly dismantle a newcomer, and that lopsided first game sends some folks running. The military also stings if you ignore it and get raided.

Who it's for

So who's this for? Groups who'll play it more than once, full stop. The first session is a teach and a beating. The third is where it clicks and you start seeing the lovely symmetry under all those cards. If you want something light, or a crowd that won't reconvene, skip it and save everyone the pain. If you've got two or three patient strategy nerds and a free evening, this is about as good as the heavy stuff gets. The endgame stays tense right to the last point.
